Spa Sliač

A duo of custom fonts for Spa Sliač.

The new typefaces are digitizations of two typefaces used for signage in the spa campus. The first one is the original typeface custom-designed by the architect Rudolf Stockar in 1924 for the new spa complex, currently preserved only in signage on the roof of the Palace spa hotel. The second typeface, still in use today in signage around the spa campus, was an existing typeface introduced into use in the 1970s (as assumed).

The original signage from the roof of the Palace spa hotel was developed into a digital typeface Sliač A, which is structurally and aesthetically based on the typefaces of geometric art nouveau era and Bauhaus, the trends that dominated design and architecture in years around the construction of the spa hotel. The typeface has been developed into a full set of upper and lower case letters, including extended Latin diacritics, numbers and a complete set of symbols. The vertical variant of the acute diacritic mark based on the original signage was also preserved.

The Sliač B typeface is a complete redrawing of the Blippo typeface (Joe Taylor, Robert Trogman, 1969), which is currently used for signage around the spa campus. This typeface is based on the Universal typeface (Herbert Bayer, 1925) and the Bauhaus design aesthetic. It exists only in one weight and in a rather unsuccessful digitization of the original master. Sliač B is a new design created specifically for use in the visual identity of Spa Sliač. Compared to the original Blippo typeface, all existing glyphs were completely redrawn, drawing details were corrected (e.g. B, e, u), the new construction of select characters was modified (e.g. G, F, S), the spacing and kerning were improved, full Latin diacritics, symbols, tabular numerals were added, and the typeface was expanded into a family of six weights.
