About

Classic Slovak street plate typeface.

Manual Grotesk A is a utilitarian geometric sans-serif typeface primarily intended for display use consisting of 6 styles, with no contrast, narrow width, and large x-height.

Manual Grotesk A supports Basic Latin and Extended Latin and covers over 100 languages. With total of 580 glyphs, it includes the default set of proportional lining figures. Additional features like stylistic set 1–6, small capitals, all small capitals, and ordinals allow for further customization and versatility.

Manual Grotesk A typeface is, almost without any divergences, based on the Richard Pípal’s original model for manually constructed typeface from the mid-20th century.

This iconic typeface, practically omnipresent during the socialist era, remains in declining usage today – on Slovak street signage plates. Therefore, its digitization is an effort to preserve it as well as an attempt to re-introduce it in a new context.
